How does Cumulus Linux behave under stress and performance tests?


This post is for Cumulus Linux with physical hardware, meaning no Cumulus VX.

A customer recently asked to get stress tests results and performance numbers when using Cumulus Linux with some or any of the switches provided on the HCL. This includes east/west traffic, north/southbound traffic, certain features enabled (ACL, larger routing table, QoS, etc...), or all features enabled supported by Cumulus Linux.

The answer is line rate as long as the feature is done in hardware and not processed by the CPU. A switch running Cumulus Linux (with its supported features) has the same forwarding performance as other switches that use the same chip. All of the features currently supported by Cumulus Linux are done in hardware (ACLs, IPv4/IPv6 routing, QoS, etc...). NAT, on the other hand, is a feature that would be performed partially by the CPU but it is not currently supported by Cumulus Linux.
